great article yesterday in the guardian about this guy who was a history teacher in london in the 70’s…and also a keen amateur photgrapher. his shots are now finding a new lease of life through the likes of flickr, etc.

at the time, he was simply taking shots of the people around him, observing, recording…

today, they are a magical evocation of the mid-to-late 70’s era that many of us grew up in

mighty mighty fine

April 29, 2008

the go betweens were probably australia’s greatest musical export of the 1980s (arguably the best band to come out of australia full-stop). formed around the songwriting partnership of  grant mclennan and robert forster they made some brilliant albums, the best of which probably being ‘16 lovers lane’. then they split up…made a few solo albums each before getting back together in the early part of this century and recording 3 quite superb albums in the shape of  ‘friends of rachel worth’, ‘bright yellow, bright orange’ and ‘oceans apart’.

then, last year, grant mclennan died unexpectedly and this, ‘the evangelist’ is forster’s first album since.

in the song-writing partnership, mclennan was always the ’sunnier’ and more melodic of the two with forster being slightly more introspective. this new album, however, is a total joy from start to finish. it features 3 songs that were co-written with mclennan and it essentially sounds like a go betweens record…fans of intelligent, emotive, melodic songwriting should buy this immediately. then buy all of their back catalogue.

it made a brilliant soundtrack to this morning’s sunkissed drive over the black isle looking out over the cromarty firth to the snow-topped fannich’s.

marvelous.

pama international - love filled dub band

April 19, 2008

it’s nearly a year since i saw this lot perform on stage at glastonbury on the thursday night before the official festival starts. it was in a big tent full of happy people and it wasn’t raining. michael and i had beers in hand and the place was jumping. very nice indeed.

ska dub punk featuring ex members of the specials and various other early 80’s two tone types…this, their most recent album, is a belter. i was reminded of pama international recently while cooking dinner on a saturday evening and listening to craig charles’ (excellent) radio show on 6 music…with pama international in session.

after enjoying a curry tonight at our neighbour’s…came home…everyone else went to bed and i listened to this on my headphones with a glass of red. recommended. highly recommended. all elements of that scenario.

gutenburg

April 15, 2008

amid all the depressingly dysfunctional claptrap gameshow telly such as the ‘apprentice’ and ‘i’d do anything’ that’s blighting our screens just now (is it any wonder radio is booming?), it was a joy to watch a gem of a programme last night about the gutenburg press.

if you missed it, you can watch it here:

lovingly presented by stephen fry, this was far from just a factual re-telling of the story of the world’s first printing press…but more a celebration of the invention that gave birth to the printed word and, in many senses, the media. as fry points out…you can imagine a world without computers, without tv…but can you imagine a world without print?

excellent stuff.

pullman

April 11, 2008

the new philip pullman was published last week

i read this in one sitting and it is excellent…set as a prequel to the first of the dark materials books and featuring two of the main characters - lee scoresby and iorek byrnison (the ballonist and the bear). ok. no-one said it was hyper-realism.

the downside is that it’s not a novel. it’s not even a novella…it’s a short story packaged up by the publishers (all be it beautifully) to wring a tenner out of a willing public in the absence of a new full-length pullman book.

a highly enjoyable hour or so, nevertheless…

accelerate

April 11, 2008

on the evidence of the single and the recent radio 2 concert…i really thought this would be brilliant. but it’s not. it’s merely ok…better than recent rem efforts but not the return to form that the media has been heralding.

that’s not to say there are not great tracks on it…the album starts brilliantly with 4 cracking songs in the shape of ‘living well is the best revenge’, ‘man-sized wreath’, ’supernatural superserious’ and ‘hollow man’, none of which would be out of place on albums like life’s rich pageant or (the under-rated) new adventures in hi-fi.

but the album tails off badly towards the end into instantly forgettable dirge and the truly awful final track ‘i’m gonna dj’ which has to rank among one of the worst things rem have ever committed to vinyl, so to speak.

i really wanted this to be great…but i guess i’ll have to console myself by listening to the reckoning…or fables…or murmur…or chronic town…

edinburgh

April 11, 2008

been really busy of late (hence no blogs) travelling around scotland including spending the better part of a week in edinburgh as a tourist. first time i’ve experienced this and we all had a great time seeing friends and family and enjoying the city as a visitor…which does allow for a different perspective on the place

as part of a really busy week we saw the delightful estella (and her equally delightful mum and dad)

had a lovely day at the science festival then the botanics with the jackson 4

went to Sandy’s favourite place in the world…the royal museum of scotland (soon to close for 3 years for re-invention)…followed by a visit to luca’s…which still makes better ice cream than any we have had in italy

and, of course a few beverages with my old chums in the bow bar

we also took the opportunity to see josh ritter at a packed liquid rooms. ok. not as good as last time.

along with seeing all the grannies and grandads and a return visit to west linton…all in all…a nice wee trip
